Martha

Light a candle and remember the presence of God is with you.
Cut out the pieces to help you tell this story.
There are times and places when women are treated as less important than men.
This is not right. God loves us all. (Pause.)
Yet, my name is still a part of God’s story.
Your name is also a part of God’s story. (Draw a heart with your finger.)
My name is MARTHA.
Place Martha in front of you.
My story is found in the stories of Jesus.
Take time to look at the Bible timeline at the bottom.
Jesus was one of my closest friends. After my brother died, I went to find Jesus. My sister, Mary, waited at home.
I was never good at sitting still. There was always something that needed to be cleaned, cooked, and looked after.
The death of my brother, Lazarus, had broken my heart.
I needed my friend Jesus who had also loved my brother.
People often know that Jesus was able to raise my brother Lazarus from the dead after I found Jesus. It was me, however, who confronted and challenged Jesus because I was so upset that he had not been there earlier.
He then taught me to remember that the most important thing I need to focus on is him. He reminded me that sometimes we must wait for him.
… … … … … Wait… … … … Wait… … … …
Wait… … Wait… … … … Wait… … … … Wait… … … …
We must sit still and just be with him.
Jesus is always with us.
My name is Martha. I am part of God’s story.

John 11:20-22
(Common English Version)
When Martha heard that Jesus had arrived, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house.
Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my
brother would not have died. Yet even now I know that God will do anything you ask.”
I wonder…
… how Martha felt when her brother died?
… what it was like to be friends with Jesus?
… what type of meal they would share?
… if you ever have trouble waiting?
